Understanding The Basics
What are cerec Same-Day Crowns?
CEREC same-day crowns are built with CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing) tools, and are made in our office instead of at a third-party dental lab.
Traditionally, dental crowns had to be made at a third-party lab, which usually meant you had to wear a temporary crown and come back for your permanent crown in 2-3 weeks when your permanent crown arrived at your dentist’s office.
But with CEREC technology, our South Philadelphia dentists can scan your mouth, upload an image into a special milling machine, and cut a perfectly-fitted crown out of a durable ceramic material in just a few minutes. In most cases, you can restore your tooth in just a single, 1-2 hour appointment at our office.
What To Expect From
The Placement Process
The process begins with an oral exam at our office. Dr. Barnes or Dr. Mestichelli will determine if a CEREC crown is right for you. If you’re a good candidate for a CEREC crown, they will begin the procedure by cleaning your mouth and numbing the treatment area. Then, any damaged or decayed enamel will be removed from your tooth with a dental drill, and it will be trimmed to prepare it for a crown.
Once your tooth has been trimmed, Dr. Barnes or Dr. Mestichelli will use an intraoral scanner to take a 3D image of the tooth, and upload it into a computer. Using the computer, your crown will be built to fit your tooth perfectly.
After the design has been finalized by Dr. Barnes or Dr. Mestichelli, it will be uploaded to a CEREC machine, and your crown will be cut out of a tooth-colored block of porcelain. This process only takes a few minutes.
Finally, once your crown has been built, Dr. Barnes or Dr. Mestichelli will check the fit and ensure that it looks perfect. If everything looks good, they will bond it into place using a strong dental cement. This completes the procedure, which usually only takes between 1-2 hours in total.
Caring for a cerec crown
Tips & Recommendations
There is no long recovery period after you get a CEREC crown. You can eat your favorite foods and get back to your day-to-day routine right away, increasing your convenience. When it comes to caring for your new CEREC crown, the best thing you can do is treat it just like a natural tooth.
That means you need to brush at least twice a day for two minutes, floss once a day, and see Dr. Bill Mestichelli or Dr. Michael Barnes for a six-month cleaning and oral exam at Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates. That’s all you need to do to keep your crown strong and bright, and to ensure the underlying tooth remains healthy and free of further decay and damage.
