With sedation available for our patients, we will keep you feeling comfortable and safe throughout your entire placement process.
Caring for Your New Smile
Maintenance of Dental Implants
One of the best things about dental implants is that they do not require special care once they have healed. To care for a single-tooth implant, all you have to do is brush and floss normally, and come to see the team at Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates for regular six-month cleanings and oral exams. It’s that simple!
Restore Missing Teeth with Crowns
Single-Tooth Implants
Single-tooth implants consist of two parts: the implant itself (a small, rod-shaped piece of titanium that is surgically placed into your jaw) and a restoration (a porcelain dental crown). After your placement procedure, your implant bonds with your jaw bone. Once it completely heals and osseointegrates, the implant functions as an artificial tooth root. The crown then attaches to your implant to restore your tooth. Together, your implant and crown will work together to restore the form and function of your smile.
What to Expect
The Dental Implant Process
The implant process begins with a comprehensive oral exam at Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates. We will examine your mouth and take x-rays and images to determine if your jaw and gum tissue are strong enough to support an implant.
If so, we will begin creating your implant placement plan. During your placement procedure, one of our dentists will clean and numb your mouth, then create an opening in your gums and jaw bone. Your implant will be placed precisely into this opening and the treatment area will be cleaned, disinfected, and sutured shut.
Initial healing takes only about 1-2 weeks. However, it takes about 3-6 months for your implant to osseointegrate and bond with your bone. During this 3-6 month period, you’ll come back for checkups at our office, and we will begin taking impressions and images of your mouth to create your custom dental crown. At your final appointment, your crown will be attached to your implant permanently to fully restore your smile.
Candidates for Implants
Are Dental Implants Right for Me?
As long as you have a relatively healthy mouth and a strong jaw bone, you are a good candidate for dental implants. However, if your jaw bone has weakened due to tooth loss or if you are currently suffering from a condition like gum disease, you may require preparatory treatments before implant surgery can begin. To find out if implants are right for you, schedule an appointment at Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates today.
Know Your Options
Implants Vs. Dentures
Compared to both partial and full dentures, dental implants are superior in every way. One of the biggest benefits of implants over dentures is the natural look and feel of dental implants. Unlike dentures, dental implants are surgically implanted and secured into your jaw bone. This means that your implants will never shift or move while you eat, speak, or chew. Your implants and restorations will look and feel completely natural, unlike dentures.
Dental implants also stimulate and protect your jaw bone, unlike dentures. Like a natural tooth, the implant transmits the force from biting and chewing into your jaw, which keeps it strong. Dentures, on the other hand, do not do this, which means your jaw will weaken over time.
It’s also much easier to care for dental implants. Most implant-supported restorations, such as dental crowns, don’t have to be removed, and you can care for them just like you would care for normal teeth. Regular brushing and flossing is all you need. In contrast, dentures must be removed and cleaned regularly.
Finally, dental implants last much longer. Most implants last at least 30 years with proper care, and most patients will be able to keep their implants for the rest of their lives. Full and partial dentures, on the other hand, usually last only 3-8 years at most.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
Implants Vs. Natural Teeth
Dental implants are the type of dental restoration that is the most like a natural tooth. Just like a natural tooth, they consist of two primary parts. The implant mimics the structure of a tooth root, while the implant-supported restoration functions as an artificial tooth.
Once the implant has been placed, it has the unique ability to “osseointegrate” with your natural jaw tissue, bonding to it permanently. For all intents and purposes, it will become a natural part of your mouth. If you want a dental restoration that looks and feels just like a natural tooth, there is no better choice than a dental implant from Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates.
