Unique Advantages
Benefits of Dentures
- Dentures can restore your smile quickly, even if you’ve lost most of your teeth. The process of building your dentures usually takes just a few appointments and once your dentures are built, you’ll be able to smile, bite, and chew normally again.
- This restorative option is very affordable compared to other methods of replacing missing teeth. In most cases, dentures are covered by dental insurance.
- In the case of partial dentures, this treatment can prevent common issues caused by tooth loss such as teeth shifting.
Are Dentures Right for Me?
Good Candidates for Dentures
If you are missing only a few of your teeth, you may be a good candidate for partial dentures. This type of denture uses a plastic and metal framework to support one or more false teeth. The framework clips onto your remaining healthy teeth, filling the gaps where your missing teeth used to be. Partial dentures can be used as a temporary treatment until you can have dental implants or bridges placed, or as a long-term solution for missing teeth.
If you are missing most or all of your teeth, full dentures may be right for you. Since this type of denture is designed to fit over your gums, any remaining teeth must be extracted before your dentures can be fitted.
Are Dentures Comfortable?
What to Expect While Wearing Dentures
Modern dentures are very comfortable, and at Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates we use the latest techniques to build partial and full dentures that fit into your mouth perfectly. However, there may be a bit of an adjustment period when you start wearing your partial or full dentures. A little bit of discomfort is not uncommon, but we will work with you during follow-up appointments to ensure that the fit and function of your dentures is just right.
How Do I care
For My Dentures?
There are a few steps you will need to take to care for your new set of dentures from Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates, and Dr. Barnes or Dr. Mestichelli will provide you with a comprehensive set of instructions after your appointment. However, we’ll go over some of the basics here.
First, your dentures need to be removed and rinsed after each meal. You should also brush your teeth and/or gums after eating. This helps remove food particles from your mouth and your dentures, preventing the buildup of plaque and bacteria.
In addition, you should brush your dentures thoroughly at least once per day with a non-abrasive denture cleanser. This will help prevent staining and the buildup of bacteria, and also will remove any remaining denture adhesive from the inside of your dentures.
Be careful when handling your dentures. Partial dentures and full dentures are both fairly brittle, and can break if they are dropped into a porcelain sink or onto the ground, and partial dentures can be bent with improper handling.
Most dentures are not worn overnight, but they must remain moist to maintain their shape, so you should soak your dentures in water or in a specialized denture-soaking solution overnight. If you use a denture cleanser, make sure to rinse off your dentures in the morning before replacing them in your mouth
will wearing dentures get in the way
of talking, eating, or drinking?
Not at all. In fact, dentures are the best way to restore your ability to speak properly, eat your favorite foods, and drink your preferred beverages, because they restore your natural teeth.
Losing one or more teeth can make it hard to speak properly and pronounce certain sounds, which may make you feel less confident about speaking around others. In the same way, tooth loss can also make it hard to eat firmer and harder foods like apples, or to drink beverages.
But with a set of comfortable dentures from Mestichelli Barnes Dental Associates, you won’t have to worry about this anymore. Whether you get a set of partial dentures to restore several missing teeth, or you are missing all of your teeth and get a set of full dentures, you will be able to talk, eat, and drink properly once again.
how long will
my dentures last?
Dentures do not last forever, unfortunately. As you chew, speak, eat, and bite, they will undergo quite a bit of wear. Over time, your dentures can become warped and stop fitting properly, or they may even break or simply wear out. The shape of your gums and your jaw may also change a bit over time, which may require you to have a new set of dentures manufactured.
In most cases, you can expect a set of dentures to last you for between 5-7 years. Proper denture care can extend the life of your dentures, but they will eventually need to be replaced to ensure you can smile brightly and continue to eat your favorite foods.
